Are Stylish Shoes the Cause?
A bunion is a bony lump on the side of the foot which causes the big toe to shift towards the second toe. Bunions can be painful and cause difficulty walking. Bunions are more common in women and most women love trendy shoes with high heels and pointy toes. So does that mean that bunions are caused by women wanting to be fashionable?
No single defining cause of bunions has been identified but shoes with narrow toe boxes and high heels can definitely contribute to bunion development by pushing the foot forward and giving the toes no place to go. Other causes include our tendency to walk on hard, flat surfaces including sidewalks and floors that don’t challenge the foot to change positions and stress points. In addition, women tend to have looser ligaments, allowing the position of foot bones to shift.
If bunions are causing pain or deforming your foot, a trip to one of our podiatrists can bring relief. They often prescribe custom orthotics to help shift foot pressure and re-align foot bones. Certain exercises can help alleviate pain and lessen deformity. In some cases, surgery may be recommended to correct the bunion and help keep it from returning. There are several bunion correction techniques, so don’t presume that your bunions will require the same surgery a friend had.
