For patients with diabetes, excellent foot care is essential to prevent complications such as diabetic foot wounds. Diabetes also causes nerve damage known as peripheral neuropathy. This complication results in numbness in the feet leading to changes in balance and difficulty getting around. Neuropathy can also cause a painful, tingling sensation in the feet which may keep patients with diabetes from noticing the development of foot blisters or sores until they are well advanced. All patients who suffer from diabetes or circulatory issues should have their feet checked by a podiatrist at least twice a year.
